Today is my birthday
And I get one every year
Hard to believe
But I’ll be buried six feet underground.
Yes, those are the lyrics to ‘Six Feet Under’ by No Doubt. They are one of my all time favorite bands.
Birthdays are the day your birth is celebrated. However, the older I get the more I realize birthdays aren’t to celebrate only you. It is to celebrate what you have to offer the world. We are born into this world to be part of it as one. We are born with nothing and leave the same. All that remains is our legacy.
In truth, everyday is your birthday because the “present” is a gift.
I remember years ago, actress, Pauley Perrette, once explained in an interview that she refused gifts for her birthday and instead she did volunteer work or labors of love for others. She explained that was how she celebrated the value of her existence — being of service to others. This spoke to my soul and I never forgot her beautiful philosophy.
In fact there are some countries that don’t celebrate birthdays the way we do! In South Korea they celebrate with seaweed soup, in Australia with fairy bread. Overall, we have commercialized yet another meaningful date and substitute it with consumption.
Of course, birthday parties are always great, but the meaning behind them have become a little meaningless. It seems we have forgotten how to truly celebrate our lives.
There are people that misunderstand what being an artist is. It’s not about seeking fame and attention, it’s about connecting to the emotions that make us human and as a result connecting with others and finding the missing pieces to someone else’s heart. However, many have fallen away from this and become characters audiences loathe on screen.
Next time your birthday comes along remember to celebrate the fact we are a gift to the world and most importantly who you are. Staying true to ourselves is the
greatest celebration of all. Authenticity comes from not EVERYONE liking you, but the ones that do are meant to love you!
